Frequently Asked Questions

What is the "New" TOEFL iBT (2026)?

As of January 21, 2026, the TOEFL iBT has been shortened to approximately 90 minutes (down from 2 hours). It now features an adaptive format for Reading and Listening and has moved to a new band-based scoring system.

Which version of IELTS should I take as a student?

  • Tuition fees vary by course and institution:
  •
           Bachelor’s programs: GBP 11,000 – 20,000 per year
           Master’s programs: GBP 12,000 – 25,000 per year
  • 12. How long does it take to get my results?
    • Computer-based: 2 to 5 days.
    • Paper-based: 13 days.

Is the 0–120 score still used?

Yes, but it is being phased out. During the 2026–2028 transition period, your score report will show both the new 1.0–6.0 Band Score (aligned with CEFR) and the legacy 0–120 score to help universities adapt.

What is the cost of TOEFL in Nepal for 2026?

The registration fee is currently USD 195 (approximately NPR 27,500). Note that "Late Registration" fees are now often waived for students in the South Asia region if booking within a week of the test.

Is TOEFL accepted outside the USA?

Yes, extensively. While historically known as the "American test," the TOEFL iBT is now recognized by over 13,000 institutions in 160+ countries.

Can I take the TOEFL from home?

Yes, the TOEFL iBT Home Edition is available 24/7. However, be aware that as of 2026, some specific countries (like Australia and Germany) and certain high-tier institutions have tightened restrictions on accepting the Home Edition for visa or admission purposes.

What is "TOEFL Essentials" vs. "TOEFL iBT"?

  • iBT: The standard, more rigorous academic test (90 mins).
  • Essentials: A shorter (60–90 min), more "General English" focused test that is adaptive and cheaper, though not as widely accepted as the iBT.

How does the "Adaptive" format work?

In the Reading and Listening sections, the difficulty of the second set of questions adjusts based on your performance in the first set. This allows the test to measure your proficiency much faster.

What is the new Writing task?

The "Independent Writing" essay has been replaced. You now have "Writing for an Academic Discussion," where you must contribute a post to an online classroom forum, and a shorter task focused on practical communication (like email writing).

Are there breaks during the test?

No. With the reduction to a 90-minute duration, the scheduled 10-minute break has been removed. You are expected to complete the test in one sitting.

Scoring & Results

  • How is the IELTS score calculated?
  • You receive a score from 1.0 to 9.0 for each section. Your Overall Band Score is the average of these four, rounded to the nearest whole or half band.
  • 12. How long does it take to get my results?
    • Computer-based: 2 to 5 days.
    • Paper-based: 13 days.

What is a "good" score on the new 6-band scale?

  • 5.5 – 6.0: Equivalent to 110–120 (Top-tier/Ivy League).
  • 5.0: Equivalent to 95–105 (Standard for most high-ranking universities).
  • 4.5: Equivalent to 80–90 (Minimum for most undergraduate programs).

Does TOEFL offer a "Single Skill Retake" like IELTS?

No. If you want to improve your score in one section, you must retake the entire exam. However, the MyBest® Scores feature still automatically combines your highest section scores from all valid tests within the last 2 years.

How long are scores valid?

Scores remain valid for 2 years. If you took the "Old" format in late 2025, those scores are still valid until late 2027.

Can I use 2025 prep materials for the 2026 test?

Partially. While the English skills required are the same, the timing and task types (especially in Writing) have changed. It is better to use materials published after January 2026.

Is TOEFL harder than IELTS?

TOEFL is entirely computer-based (including speaking into a microphone), whereas IELTS offers a human-led speaking interview. Many students find the new 90-minute TOEFL less exhausting, but it requires faster typing and quicker reflexes.

What if my university only lists the 0-120 score requirements?

Don't worry. During the transition, ETS provides universities with a mapping tool. If they ask for a "100," a Band Score of 5.0 will satisfy that requirement.

What is the most common reason for score delays?

For Home Edition test-takers, technical issues or "proctoring flags" (like looking away from the screen or mouth movements during Reading) are the most common reasons for results being held for review.

How many times can I take the test?

You can take it as many times as you wish, but there must be at least 3 days between your test dates.

Does the Speaking section have different accents?

Yes. Since 2023, the TOEFL has included native-speaker accents from the UK, Australia, and New Zealand in addition to North American accents to reflect a global academic environment.
