What is the difference between IELTS Academic and General Training?

IELTS Academic is for students applying for higher education or professional registration. IELTS General Training is for migration, secondary education, or work experience. The Listening and Speaking sections are the same, but Reading and Writing tasks differ.

Which version of IELTS should I take as a student?

What documents do I need for registration?

A valid, original Passport is the only accepted identification for both registration and the test day in most regions, including Nepal.

What are the four sections of the test?

The test covers Listening (30 mins), Reading (60 mins), Writing (60 mins), and Speaking (11–14 mins).

Is there negative marking in IELTS?

No. You do not lose points for incorrect answers in the Listening or Reading sections. Always provide an answer, even if you have to guess.

Is the Speaking test done on a computer?

No. Whether you take the paper-based or computer-delivered test, the Speaking section is a face-to-face interview with a certified examiner.

Can I write on the question paper during the Reading and Listening tests?

Yes. You can make notes or underline text on the paper. However, only your answer sheet (or the computer input) is marked.

How often can I take the IELTS?

As many times as you like, but each attempt requires a new test fee.

How long is my IELTS result valid?

The Test Report Form (TRF) is valid for 2 years from the date of your test.

Is the computer-based test easier than the paper-based one?

The content and difficulty level are identical. The choice depends on your typing speed and comfort with reading from a screen versus paper.

How long should I prepare for the IELTS?

It depends on your current English level:
  • Advanced: 4–6 weeks.
  • Intermediate: 2–3 months.
  • Beginner: 6 months or more.

What are the common reasons students lose marks in Writing?

Common pitfalls include not answering all parts of the prompt, poor time management, and using "memorized" templates which examiners are trained to spot and penalize.

Can I take the IELTS at home?

Yes, IELTS Online is available in many countries for the Academic module. However, be aware that it is not accepted for migration purposes and some universities may still prefer the center-based version.

What happens if I am late for my test?

If you arrive late, you will generally not be allowed to enter the testing room, and you may lose your test fee. It is crucial to arrive at least 30–45 minutes early for check-in.
