In short

Studying in Germany in 2027: the short answer

Germany has two intakes: the winter semester (starting October 2027, the main intake) and the summer semester (starting April 2027). Most public universities charge little or no tuition, only a semester contribution. For a student visa you need an admission letter, a blocked account with €11,904 for your first year, health insurance and proof of English or German. Many winter-semester deadlines are 15 July, so start now.

Intakes

Winter semester (October 2027, the main intake) and summer semester (April 2027, with fewer courses).

Money to show

€11,904 for your first year in a blocked account (€992 a month), plus any tuition. Most public universities only charge a semester contribution of about €150 to €400.

English score

IELTS 6.0 to 6.5 for English-taught courses. German-taught courses need German at B2 to C1 (TestDaF, DSH or Goethe).

When to start

Now for October 2027 (many deadlines are 15 July). By mid-January 2027 for April 2027.

Why Germany

A degree that works for your career

Germany combines world-class engineering and science with little or no tuition at public universities.

World-ranked universities

Technical universities such as TU Munich and RWTH Aachen are among Europe's best, and German degrees are valued by employers worldwide.

Work while you study

International students can work 140 full days or 280 half days a year alongside their studies.

Stay and work after you graduate

After graduating, you can get a residence permit of up to 18 months to look for a job that matches your degree.

See our full Germany country guide →

Low or no tuition

Most public universities charge no tuition for international students, except in Baden-Württemberg (€1,500 a semester). The semester contribution often includes a local transport ticket.

What universities and the embassy look for

What a strong case looks like in 2027

German universities check your academic background carefully, and the German Embassy in Kathmandu reviews every visa file in detail. The applications that succeed show these six things clearly.

Good academic results

Solid marks in your last qualification, in a subject that leads naturally to your chosen course.

Good language scores

A strong IELTS result for English-taught courses, or German at the level your course asks for. Some basic German also helps with the visa interview and daily life.

Funds in a blocked account

€11,904 in a German blocked account for your first year, from a clear and genuine source.

Commitment to finish your intended course

You have researched your course and career well, you are passionate about it, and you plan to complete the full course.

A clear career outcome

You know what the degree leads to after graduation, and it matches your interests and background.

A high-quality education provider

Check the rankings, search for reviews and look for facilities that suit your needs before you choose where to apply.

German national student visa

What you need for your visa in 2026–27

Once your profile is strong, this is what goes into your student visa application, and how we prepare each part with you.

01

University admission

You need an admission letter from a recognised German university. Most applications go through uni-assist or the university's own portal, and we help you apply to more than one.

02

Studienkolleg or direct entry

With Nepali +2 results you usually need a one-year foundation course (Studienkolleg), or one year of a bachelor's in Nepal, before a German bachelor's. With a bachelor's degree you can apply directly for a master's. We check your route first.

03

Money for study and living

A blocked account with €11,904 for the first year (€992 a month is released to you), or a formal sponsorship letter. Our review team checks every document.

04

English or German test score

English-taught courses usually need IELTS 6.0 to 6.5. German-taught courses need German at B2 to C1, and the embassy may ask a few questions in German. Our IELTS classes help you reach the score you need.

05

Health insurance

You need travel health insurance for your visa, then German public health insurance once you enrol, which costs around €140 a month for students.

06

Visa appointment and fee

You apply for a national student visa at the German Embassy in Kathmandu. The fee is €75, paid in Nepali rupees, and appointments can take time, so book as early as you can.

What Nepali students should know for 2027

Book your visa appointment early

Student visa appointments in Kathmandu fill up quickly before each intake. Book as soon as you have your admission letter.

APS certificate check

If you studied your +2 or bachelor's in India, you may need an APS certificate. Your counsellor confirms whether it applies to you.

Blocked account amount

The blocked account has been €11,904 a year (€992 a month) since January 2025. Check for any update before you transfer money.

Rules change often. These figures were checked in November 2026 against German government and DAAD information. Your counsellor confirms the latest rules before you apply.

Common visa worries

Honest answers to the questions students ask us most

I have a study gap. Will my visa be refused?

Not automatically. What matters is a clear, documented explanation of what you did in the gap (work, training, family responsibilities) and why this course makes sense for your career now.

My grades are low. Is Germany still possible?

Public universities look closely at grades. Private universities, universities of applied sciences and Studienkolleg routes can be good options. We find the route that fits your marks.

See German universities and options →

I was refused a visa before. Can I apply again?

Yes, but you must declare it. We review your refusal letter, fix the reasons it gave and only apply again when your file is genuinely strong.

My family will sponsor me, partly with a loan. Is that enough?

A blocked account is the standard proof of funds. A formal sponsorship letter from someone living in Germany is the other option. We check which works for you before you apply.

How long does the visa take?

The German Embassy in Kathmandu usually takes several weeks after your appointment, and longer before busy intakes. Book your appointment as soon as you have your admission letter.

Can you guarantee my visa?

No one can, and anyone who promises is not being honest with you. What we do promise: a genuine, well-documented file and a straight answer if your profile needs more work first.
