New Zealand vs Australia vs UK
The short answer
There is no single best country. Each one suits a different kind of student.
New Zealand suits students who want a smaller, calmer study environment and a clear post-study work option, especially at Master's level, where the work visa can last up to three years.
Australia suits students who want a large choice of universities and courses, and who can meet a high financial requirement and a detailed Genuine Student assessment.
The UK suits students who want a shorter degree, with one-year Master's programmes, and who accept a shorter post-study work period from 2027.
Side-by-side comparison

The table gives the general picture. Your exact result depends on your course, institution and personal profile.
New Zealand
Strengths for Nepali students
A clear post-study work route. The Post-Study Work Visa lasts up to 3 years for Master's and doctoral graduates who studied full-time in New Zealand for at least 30 weeks. Degree-level graduates get open work rights, so you are not tied to one employer.
More work time during study. From 3 November 2025, eligible tertiary students can work up to 25 hours a week, up from 20, with unlimited hours for research Master's and PhD students.
A defined money process. If Immigration New Zealand asks, the Funds Transfer Scheme holds your living-cost funds in a protected account.
Pathway options. Foundation, diploma and Pre-Master's routes can help students whose grades or backgrounds are not a perfect match for direct entry.
Things to think about
Fewer big-city job opportunities than Sydney, Melbourne or London. The job market is smaller.
Visa length depends on qualification. Only some qualifications give the full three years. Many give a visa equal to your study time.
A smaller list of institutions than Australia or the UK.
Australia
Strengths
A very large choice of universities, courses and cities.
Strong brand recognition and established links with Nepal.
A Temporary Graduate visa that can run from around 18 months to several years depending on the stream and qualification.
Things to think about
High financial requirement. Applicants are generally expected to show about AUD 29,710 a year for living costs, plus tuition and travel.
Higher visa fees. Recent reports say the student visa fee rose to AUD 2,500 and the Temporary Graduate visa fee to AUD 5,750 from 1 July 2026. Confirm the current fee on the Department of Home Affairs website.
A demanding Genuine Student statement. Generic or agent-written answers are a risk, and the assessment takes your study plan, background and future plans into account.
Planning limits on new enrolments. Australia manages the number of new international students through a national planning level, so place availability can depend on the institution.
Age limit on the graduate visa. Applicants for the Temporary Graduate visa must generally be 35 or younger.
United Kingdom
Strengths
Shorter degrees. Taught Master's programmes usually last one year, which can reduce total tuition and living costs.
Globally recognised universities and strong research reputations.
A post-study route that is still open. The Graduate Route lets eligible graduates stay and work without sponsorship.
Things to think about
Shorter post-study period. For Graduate Route applications made on or after 1 January 2027, most bachelor's and Master's graduates will receive 18 months instead of two years. PhD graduates keep three years. This applies to the date of your visa application, so it affects students who start in 2027.
Higher maintenance requirements than before, with a higher monthly amount for London. Check the current figure on the UK government website.
Tighter checks. Reports point to stricter compliance and verification of funds and their source.
A levy on universities. The UK plans an international student levy of about £925 per student, charged to providers from August 2028. It does not apply to students directly, but it may affect fees and institutional behaviour.
Dependant restrictions still apply for most taught students.
So, which is best for Nepali students in 2027?
The best country is the one that fits your course, budget and plan. New Zealand stands out for a Master's graduate who wants a longer open work visa and a smaller, calmer study environment. Australia offers the widest choice but with a higher financial bar. The UK offers a shorter degree but a shorter post-study period from 2027. Compare current rules for your exact course before you commit.
